MISTY ANSWERS YOUR QUESTIONS

Rita(Rochester, Mn)
How do you and Kerri Walsh maintain such a strong team-up or partnership on the volleyball court? How are the two of you out of the court?

--Communication is very important and especially in our sport. Kerri and I respect one another immensely and we are both dedicated to the same goals. Since we live in different areas, we don’t hang out as often as we would like to but that is what happens when you live in different cities. We are together everyday though through our various workouts and when we are on the road. So our relationship doesn’t change.

Paulie (Enid, Ok)
Is there something else you want to achieve career-wise after winning the Olympic gold medal?

--I am actually a couple classes shy of getting my Masters Degree in Coaching and Athletic Administration. I love teach the next generation about our sport so coaching would be ideal for me. I love getting people to the next level. Of course being a mom can be a wonderful career too. So I would like to do both.

Tipper(Lima, Oh)
How do you see yourself after retiring from beach volleyball?

--I see my self traveling, spending time with my husband, coaching at the collegiate level, and just enjoying life. I will always be involved with the game at some level but coaching is ideal. I definitely want to retire with 3 Gold Medals!!!

Jodie(Boise City, Id)
I have read that different sports require different types of diets. Is this true? If so, what are the most important things to eat for volleyball players? What does your diet consist of, mostly?

--I am sure different sports do as well as different athletes. Everyone is different so varying diets are needed. I can’t tell you what to eat since we are all different. I know that just recently I have cut out caffeine and have been eating more fish. It is just important to eat well balanced meals and snacks more frequently. That has been a hard one for me but it is a routine like anything else. I try to eat a lot of fruit, veggies, and lean meat.

Georg(Lancaster, Pa)
How difficult was it growing up in a family of athletes? Was there always a pressure to excel and to achieve in your chosen sport?

--It was great growing up in a family of athlete’s. There was always some sort of activity to be done plus we spent a lot of time outside or at the beach. I was never pressured into anything so it was nice being able to decide for myself. I picked the sport I love, even though I do miss soccer.....My parents always supported me no matter what. Pressure to win, absolutely not....pressure to play hard and have fun, most certainly.

Sandee(Providence RI)
How should young people just starting out playing sport take care of their bodies? What's your number one tip?

--Maintaining your flexibility is key, so stretching and going through a proper warm-up and cool down will only help you to last longer as an athlete. Also, a very important thing to remember is to stop if you are hurting. As athlete’s we like to play through the pain, but why.....it may hinder us later. It is ok to take time off when you need to.

Kaye(Alexandria, La)
What do you do to unwind and relax after a tough game?

--After a tough game, I usually go get a massage at the players tent before leaving for the day. A nice shower and some good dinner completes the day. Then off to bed ready to take on the world the next day!

Corrine(Huntsville, AL)
Your parents are both athletes. What were the greatest lessons you learned from them when it comes to sports and to excelling in your chosen field?

--Always staying one step ahead of your opponents even if they are on the same team. Don’t be afraid of failure because it is a part of learning.

Arnie(Fairless Hills, Pa)
What would you recommend for a teenager who's into volleyball when it comes to food and diet?

--Food is fuel for your body. What is ingested is what will get you through matches. Don’t skip out on meals and be creative.

Jennifer(Arlington, Va)
Being out in the sun too much, what are the special things you do for your skin? Do you follow a special diet, a special exercise routine or beauty regimen?

--My number one thing to do is wear a good sunscreen. I wear the strongest on my face. Also find a good cleansing regimen and follow it. I recently bought a Clarsonic face cleaner and love it. Also, drink lots of water. At least 1-2 times a month I will get a facial.

“Play hard, have fun and eat right! "
